About Our Events and Exhibitions

Art Gallery Prudencia is as much about introducing its patrons to a wide variety of art and artists as it is about offering you a selection of art for your home or office.

Throughout the year, we hold numerous events where you are able to meet the artists and learn about their background, their artistic journey, and their inspiration for their work in our gallery.

In addition to these events, on the first Friday of every month we have our "Wine Down” gathering from 5 to 7 pm- a social event at which you can meet some of our artists and enjoy a glass of wine and see what is currently on display at the gallery. We would love to have you join us!

"Heritage House"
Oil on Panel  20 x 16

"I Found the Address"
Oil on Panel  20 x 20

When gathering work for a show one can curate around a theme, a genre, or a social message. Or it can just be a hodgepodge concept of individual work that comes from a single source.

This time we’ll go with the latter. It’s way more fun that way! A visual experience of paintings that have nothing in common. All are unique stories.

And let's call it "This and That".

The Opening Reception for this exhibit was held on Saturday, November 11, 2023, from 2 to 4 pm. Lon gave an artist talk at 3 pm.

We very much hope you were able to attend the Opening Reception and the Artist Talk, or that you were able to come by the gallery to see this wonderful exhibit during its run. But if you weren't able to visit the gallery in person, you can still take a look at all of Lon's works that were in this exhibit by clicking on the image at left.

"What Is and What Was": A Solo Exhibition by Mary James
Opening Reception on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023, from 2 to 4pm        Artist Talk on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023, at 2pm

"What Is and What Was"    46 x 92    Diptych, Acrylic/mixed media

"Artist Mary James' one woman show is absolutely stunning. This is a show not to be missed. Her paintings are beautifully
created with organic shapes filled with an exquisite nuance of color that will take your breath away. She is not one to shy
away from large canvases which dominate the show. James has approached design with a sophisticated elegance which
shows in her brushstrokes as they are light yet telling of the artist hand painted with confidence."

                                                                                                                                       Gwen Fox- Artist and Teacher

"What Is and What Was" is a captivating collection of expressive abstract paintings exploring the fragility and resilience of the human experience and the interplay between the present and the past. Guided by intuition, James digs deep into a dialogue of what is and what was, exploring how it reflects changes in our lives— differing states of health, mind, or engagement. Each painting in this series explores life's transitions as viewed through the artist's personal journey.

As she begins her artistic process, James allows her instincts and truth to guide her, making quick, gestural marks that build into layers of color, texture, and spatial relationships. After numerous layers, a sense of balance and harmony begins to formulate the composition.

The complexity and multi-layered nature of James' soulful paintings invites the viewer to intimately explore their own memories and life changes. “What Is and What Was” is a beautiful reminder of the power of art to profoundly connect us all, regardless of our backgrounds or beliefs, and to help us find meaning and beauty in the world around us.

"One Fragile Moment"

We very much hope you will be able to attend the Opening Reception and the Artist Talk, or at least come by the gallery to see this wonderful exhibit during its run (until October 28th). But if you aren't able to visit the gallery in person, you can still take a look at all of James' works that are in this exhibit by clicking on the image of James' "One Fragile Moment" at left.

Chrysanthemums and Watermelons

From Life
The Art of Vikki Fields

Vikki Fields works out of her studio in San Antonio, Texas. She paints still life, figurative and portrait oil paintings, as well as plein air landscapes in Central, South and West Texas. Fields' academic background includes a degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Incarnate Word and graduate studies in painting and sculpture at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Vikki has exhibited widely in San Antonio and the Southwest and has executed numerous private commissions. She has been the recipient of many awards, including the Julian Onderdonk Museum Purchase Award from the San Antonio Art League and Museum in 2014.

"I hope I carry the light and space of South and West Texas into my paintings. I choose to work from life. I find color and composition and the psychology of life infinitely variable and challenging."-- Vikki Fields

We hope you will join us here at the gallery on April 22, 2023, from 2 to 4 pm, when we will hold the Opening Reception for this important exhibit of beautiful artworks from one of our newest artists. There will be an Artist Talk at 3 pm, and you will have a chance to discover what inspires the artworks that Vikki Fields creates, and learn something about her technique.

This exhibit will continue through May 20th.

If you weren't able to stop by for the opening of this important exhibit we hope you will come in during its run to see these beautiful artworks by Vikki Fields. You can also view the works that are included in this exhibit by clicking on the image at left.

From artist Susan Riley:

"The portraits in this collection were selected carefully and thoughtfully. Some needed restoration as they are all from a time of expanding knowledge of film, developing, and printing. Storage has not always been kind. All cried out for color. The process in Photoshop is similar to painting in other mediums but working in layers allows for changing directions midstream. Color choices rely on research; baring that success, imagination takes over.

"The final stage of creating these pieces is done directly on the fine art print. Tiny pearls, crystals, microfine glitter and hand painting lend a dimensional aspect beyond the flat surface. The reflected light can be glorious. Choosing the frame is the final decoration to protect and display the finished portrait.

"Working closely on the face of someone from the past is almost spiritual. When you sit back in the moment of completion, your hope is that they would give their approval."

This exhibit opened on Saturday, March 4th, and at the Opening Reception, held from 2 to 4 pm, Susan gave an Artist Talk, giving all who attended insight into her inspiration and her technique. The exhibit closed on April 8th. If you weren't able to stop by the gallery to see this beautiful exhibit during its run, you can view the works that were included in it by clicking on the image at left.

Photography / Paper / Wood

Our next show is appropriate for the New Year, as it showcases artists who work in media new to our various shows and exhibits. The beauty of art isn't limited to painting and the gallery already showcases works by sculptors and collage artists. But with this show, we are extending the variety of artworks we display with works by four San Antonio artists who work in "Photography, Paper, and Wood".

Sara K. McKethan is a 25-year-old photographer who often sees the extraordinary disguised in the commonplace. Len Roberts has been "turning wood" for fifteen years, creating beautiful designs in the process. Artist Marcia Roberts works with paper fragments from print media, creating abstract works evoking moments, memories, and emotions. Photographer Mike Roberts specializes in high-contrast black and white to express his reaction to what he sees in the world around him.

This remarkable show opened on January 21, 2023 with an artist reception from 2-4 pm. The show continued through February 18th. We hope you were able join us on the 21st to meet all four of these artists, but of course we also hope you were able to stop in during the show's run to take your time and appreciate the inspiring works created by these talented artists. If you couldn't visit the Gallery to see this exhibit in person, you can still view the artworks that were part of it by clicking the icon at left.

Art Gallery Prudencia's Small Works Show

Just in time for Christmas, we and our artists have put together a show of diminutive works (with diminutive prices) that are ideal for those of you who would like to give the gift of art this Christmas.

The works on display in this show- which were created by many of our Gallery's favorite artists- are small but wonderful examples of the skill and technique of the artists who created them. These works are also just what you might need to fill that smaller, yet still empty space in your home.

We encourage you to drop by the gallery to see this display, first unveiled at our "Christmas Bubbly Afternoon" on December 3rd. We've had great interest in many of these works, so try to come by as soon as you can so that your particular favorite is still available.

If you can't visit the Gallery soon to see the beautiful artworks in our show, you can have a look at all of them right here. Just click on the button at left and you can see all of the works in the show. Use the lower-corner arrows to browse through the artworks. When you find a work that interests you, you can call us to check to see if it still available.

"Christmas Bubbly Afternoon"
--Art, Bites and Champagne

On Saturday, December 3rd, 12 to 4 pm, we held our annual Christmas event.

The gallery was full of new art from numerous gallery artists just in time for the holidays! We showcased our baskets along with paintings in a range of sizes, so our patrons could find that perfect piece for that special someone (or perhaps just a treat for themselves)! We had a wonderful time celebrating the season with our patrons!

Joy of Compliment
Vibrant Colors
The Art of Soon Y Warren

In this exhibit, the use of color- particularly bold, vibrant color- took center stage, as we showcased a series of works by Soon Y. Warren- full-time artist, teacher, and national/international workshop instructor.

Born in South Korea and currently living in Fort Worth, Texas, Soon's favorite subjects are those found in the natural world, and in that world, color is everywhere. "I’m inspired by the beauty and complexity of nature and our surroundings," she says. "I try to paint the essence of my subjects using my sincere feelings for nature."

With her Associate Degree in Commercial Art, Soon began painting full time in 1998, and has since had much success, with a great many exhibitions resulting in awards too numerous to mention. Warren is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society (NWS), the American Watercolor Society (AWS), Southern Watercolor Artists (SW), the Texas Watercolor Society- Purple Sage Brush (TWS), the Transparent Watercolor Society (TWSA), and American Woman Artists (AWA). Soon’s paintings are in the permanent collections of private, corporate and educational institutions, both in the United States and abroad.

This exhibit opened on Saturday, September 17, 2022 with an Opening Reception from 2 to 4 pm. As part of the Opening Reception, there was an Artist Demonstration at 3 pm. The exhibit continued through October 22nd. Many of our gallery patrons joined us at the opening and during the exhibit to see how Soon Y Warren has brought the vibrant colors of nature to life.

Reflections on Nature/Reflections on Humanity
The Works of Stefani Job Spears and Joseph Hammer

The two artists featured in this show seem at first glance to be polar opposites. They work in different media and have very different styles. But on a closer look, it becomes apparent that the two artists are on parallel paths in reflecting nature and humanity in their work.

Deluge
Stefani Job Spears

Stefani Job Spears, a teacher, innovator, and artist-in-residence at the Texas Commission for the Arts, uses different media, including handmade paper and pastels, to reflect her love of nature. In Spears' graceful, flowing works we see the influence of nature and nature's shapes very, very clearly.

This exhibit opened on
Saturday, June 25, 2022
with an Opening Reception
from 2 to 4 pm.

The exhibit continued
through July 30th.

There was also an
Artist's Talk
on Saturday, July 23
at 3pm.

We hope you were able join us at the opening, at the Artist's Talk, and during the exhibit to see how these two artists reflect nature and humanity.

In Omni Uno
Joseph Hammer

Joseph Hammer has always worked in the medium of collage, and he produced a great many of them before he "found his voice" when he began using old hardback books in his works. Doing so satisfied his artistic needs while acknowledging his fascination with history, words, and time itself.

Skyscapes and Domestics
The Art of Pam and Ric Slocum

The subjects artists choose range from the small to the vast, resulting in works that are detailed and intimate or broad-brushed and expansive. The works of the two artists featured in Skyscapes and Domestics are a good example of this.

Crown of Thorns
Pam Slocum
Pam Slocum, in her images of small-scale objects ("domestics", or things close to home) can show us all the rich detail that she, herself, sees. We feel as if we saw those same objects with her. Ric Slocum must use different techniques to show us his very large subjects ("skyscapes", like the skies of Oklahoma and New Mexico), as he has to express the grandeur of what he sees and, again, we feel as if we were there. This show will give us all an insight into how much of an effect the subject an artist chooses has on the techniques they might use to help us see what they do.

This exhibit showing how a subject can determine a technique opened on Saturday, April 23 with an Opening Reception and Artist Talk from 2 to 4 pm. The exhibit contined through June 4th. We hope you were able join us at the opening and during the exhibit to see how these two artists present their very different subjects.

Faded Glory
Drawn to Nature
The Art of Anna Lisa Leal

Anna Lisa Leal is an award-winning artist and native Texan whose artwork embodies the resplendent beauty and pattern in nature and its inhabitants. She is well known for her botanical works which most often include representations of the colorful yet dangerous beauty of agave, cactus, succulents, and their flowers.

The exhibit opened on February 5th, 2022 and the response was so great that Anna Lisa also did an Artist Demonstration on Saturday, March 5th from 1 to 3pm here at the gallery. We hope you were able to join us for a rare look into the artistic process.

Cereus Nocturne

"Christmas Bubbly Afternoon"
--Art, Bites and Champagne

Please join us Saturday, December 11th, 12 to 4 pm, for our annual Christmas event.

This year, we have asked our gallery artists to create a series of small artworks in their style. These beautiful, unique pieces have been created for holiday giving, and one of them is sure to be your perfect gift.

Come let us help you find it.

Two Women, Two Views
Kim Collins and Mary James

While photographers show us the real world as it actually appears, artists show us their interpretations of that same world, but of course these interpretations can be dramatically different. For it is the impression that the world makes on the artist that is reflected in their work.

In this show we explored these differences by comparing the different views of the world by artists Kim Collins and Mary James. Their differing interpretations of their subject give us an invaluable and instructive insight into the artistic "process"- into the differing ways that the artist looks at the world.

This show opened with a Reception and Artist Talk on Saturday, September 25, 2021, 1 to 4 pm, here at the gallery. We had our Closing Reception on Saturday November 6th, from 2 to 4 pm.

Vintage Beauty
Artist Susan Masinter Riley

"These original photographs, some more than 100 years old, were all shot in black and white. These extraordinary women were anything but!

Some of the images needed restoration, all cried out for color. The first steps are done in Photoshop, then a fine art print is made and embellishments are hand applied. Swarovski crystals, faux pearls, micro glitter and hand painting lend the brilliance these photographs deserve.

The clothing, jewelry and costumes of these eras as well as the stories of these women inspire my art. As a photographer with darkroom experience, illuminating details in an old image is powerful to me. As a woman, seeing these ladies glow as they must have long ago is exhilarating!"--(Susan Riley)

This exhibit opened on June 4, 2021 and closed on July 31st.

The Rattlesnake Gang at Big Bend National Park

If you love the outdoors, and particularly if you love the spectacular scenery of West Texas, you will definitely want to join us for this multi-artist exhibit. The Closing Reception and Artist Demo were held on Saturday, May 22nd from 2 to 4 pm. Our dress code for this event continued to be "Mask Casual".

"What I Did Last Summer"
20 Paintings by Rick Slocum

Tuesday, January 18, 2019

At this event, artist Ric Slocum met with patrons to explain the techniques he uses to create his works, and answer their questions about individual pieces.

"After years of working in the theatre I find that I work best with a deadline. Opening night the show must go on. Now that I'm painting, the deadline, opening night still works. In the Spring of 2018, I set myself a goal of 20 paintings by the end of the summer. This show is the result. When I begin, I see the painting in my mind. I may work through several versions before I start on canvas. At mid-point the image on canvas separates from the image in my mind, and I have to start painting what is in front of me. The end result is a blend of the mental image and the process."-- Ric Slocum

"Four Realists: Interpreting the World"

Friday, October 12, 2018

Modern Realism was the theme as Art Gallery Prudencia featured four artists who offer realistic interpretations of the world around them. Gallery visitors explored this artistic genre- perhaps art's oldest- as these four artists compared and contrasted their creative process. Visitors to the show came away with a new appreciation of modern Realism and a better ability to compare it to other styles.

Art Gallery Prudencia: Our Artists and Their Art

Friday, December 8, 2017

Art Gallery Prudencia opened this evening as North San Antonio's newest gallery of fine, original art. Tonight, we welcomed friends, local residents, business owners, and the public to see our new exhibition space. Our hope this evening was to meet the community, and let them meet us, with the hope that they will return as our cadre of artists increases and the variety of art on display expands. The evening was a successful start to what we hope will be a successful enterprise, that hopes to expose the public to the finest in original artwork, with the hope that those same people will find pieces that speak to them, and which they will be pleased and proud to have in their homes.

To record our first public event, we took as many pictures as we could, and the best of them are in the slideshow below. Use the little arrows in the lower corners to move from one image to the next, and "enjoy the show"!
